Cannot use "Safely remove hardware" icon. I am trying to remove a USB thumb drive from the fax/printer.?

Update:

I have a USB thumb drive in the fax/printer (HP Photosmart 7520) and used it to scan documents and save them as PDF files. When I try to right-click on the "Safely remove hardware" icon, it cannot find the thumb drive. Any ideas?

    The USB thumb drive is not connected to the computer, so the "Safely remove hardware" icon is irrelevant.

    Shut the computer down. It isn't really the fax/printer that is writing to the drive -- the computer is. When you shut the computer down, it will write out any cached data.

    Thanks. Do you know why it can't "see" the drive? I hope I won't have to shut down every time I want to save something.
