False. Nasa astronauts today wear the SAFER (Simplified Aid For EVA Rescue) jetpack when on spacewalks. It can provide a small amount of rocket thrust for emergencies if they become untethered, enough to stop them tumbling and fly back to the ISS or (when it used to fly) Shuttle.

In the event that wasn't enough, perhaps because something shoved the astronaut hard away from the station, I expect there would be an attempt to use the Soyuz to rescue a drifting astronaut. There is always a Soyuz docked to the ISS which I believe is able to depart quickly in case of an emergency on the station.

Depends on the mission and the spacecraft. If he "gets away" from the space station - there's a chance to move the station to where he is (but, *only* a chance...) The space shuttle was capable of moving quite easily, so as to retrieve a 'lost' astronaut if it was needed.

False, not inevitable. Recent developments give some hope that the space craft can find the lost astronaut.

  • It would be pretty stupid for astronauts not to have a pressurized air pen as a fall-back for getting loose and separated.

They can find the astronaut by using the "Find my i-Phone" application.
