Word help please. The word is thalassic and this is how it is used on dictionary.com He shook his head?

He shook his head; and I, recalling the crimson chamber in his castle, speculated upon his living arrangements in thalassic caverns I could scarcely conceive. So does this mean the castle and caverns are surrounded by water or an ocean ? Thank you.

The passage comes from Gene Wolfe's science fiction novel Urth of the New Sun.

In this context, Wolfe used it to mean under the sea.

"... Those who live under the sea already, as I have now for fifty years."

Thalium is a soft, silver-white, metalic chemical element whose compounds that are very poisonous. So a thalassic cave is a poisonous cavern. Good luck.
