Why does the US ban haggis?

For a country that prides itself on freedoms, it is remarkably restrictive on foodstuffs. The ban on properly made haggis according to the traditional recipe is a great disappointment to all Americans of Scots descent, who therefore cannot celebrate Burns Night properly with the "great chieftain o' the puddin' race". And all because the FDA disallows a key ingredient and would rather see good food go in the bin. What is their problem?

Update:

Can those who say it's foul ever say they have tried it? Of course if they've never ventured outside the US, they won't have done.

Update 2:

Oh come on guys, "I think it's disgusting" isn't a reason.

Haggis tastes very good, and in any case much better and healthier than Mc Donald's hamburgers !

I don't know the answer to the question, but I tried smoked haggis for the first time last week - it was absolutely delicious, fried. You can order it from the Galloway Smokehouse, and maybe get it elsewhere.

Not sure. The USA usually have the FDA that approves food in the country, but I still have no idea about why they would do that with Haggis, since they eat sausages.

Are you sure there is a ban on Scottish haggis? I know you can get Rocky Mountain oysters.

The Scottish never throw away anything they could use later. They are known to be very "Thrifty." Anyone who says the like Haggis is lying sheepherder.

After the mad cow disease outbreak, there was a ban on European imports of foods presenting a risk of mad cow disease and related diseases. Sheep lungs were included in the ban. It's a food safety issue.
