Means to proverbially hang someone. Outing them for doing something wrong.

For an example: 2 brothers both agree to not tell dad about the broken window. Dad finds out and asks who did it. Brother 1 "throws brother 2 under the bus" by saying "HE DID IT".

its basically a colloquial term for getting someone into trouble or sabotaging them.

An example might be Michael Cohen. He had been the presidents long time "lawyer" and fixer and had previously expressed extreme loyalty to him, even saying that he would "take a bullet" for the president. Cohen took out a $130,000 loan to help Trump cover up an affair he had with a porn star. But as soon as the feds began looking into Michael Cohen Trump dropped him like a hot potato.

When Benghazi happened, Hillary blamed the murder of 4 Americans on a Youtube video, and had the director thrown in jail. Hillary "threw him under the bus" to keep Americans from finding out that her incompetence lead to 4 deaths. But we found out despite her and Obama's extensive efforts to cover it up.

It's when you abandon someone or put them in the way of blame to spare yourself. An example would be Obama abandoning long-time ally Israel to curry favor with Muslim countries.

"Obama threw Israel under the bus to gain friendships with various Muslim countries in the Middle East."
