Why are Taiwanese so offended when called Chinese?

I don't know much about Chinese history, but wasn't Taiwan part of China before the the Chinese civil war? After the Chinese Communists won on the mainland, the Chinese Nationalists retreated and relocated their government to Taiwan, officially called the Republic of China, along with many civilians. So from my point of view, that makes majority of Taiwanese population ethnically Han Chinese. I don't mean to offend anybody, just really curious.

    I don't know much about Chinese history,THEN LEARN SOMETHING.

    Same reason most southerners do not like to be called Yankees.

    Because Taiwan was China’s territory before.

    The Chinese are their enemies, because China wants to take Taiwan back.

    The Taiwanese are all that's left of the anti-communist forces that opposed MAO in his communist revolution during WWII.
