I'm old enough to identify with the old western gunmen portrayed in movies and TV shows of the 1950-60's, where everyone carried one or two guns and could, and did, use them to protect themselves.

No. Private citizens stop about ten times as many crimes as the police do.

No. We would be a lot less free though.
