A particle, P, moves along the x-axis. At time t seconds, the displacement, x metres, of P from the origin O, is given by x 0.5t^2(t^2 − 2t +1)
Show that P will never move along the negative x-axis.

You have that x = 0.5t²(t²-2t+1) and you have to show that, for all t, x is never negative. This means that we need to show that x>=0 for all t in R.
We just rewrite x as 0.5t²(t-1)². This is the product of two squares and it's always positive or zero, so we just showed that x>=0 is indeed true for all t.
