Similarities
Tackling
Having a ball
Differences
American footy allows you to defend the ball carrier (I personally find that unfair)
After a tackle Rugby has a scrum while in American footy they set up again
American footy wers protection gear
In rugby only pass sideways
In American footy u have to throw the ball
In rugby the ball carrier is pretty much on their own
After a knock on (dropping the ball) Rugby has a scrum while in American footy it's a turn over
Rugby has two 40 minutes play while American footy has four 15 minutes play
A **** tonne more

There are very few similarities. In rugby union, for example, one of the basic laws is that you cannot throw the ball forward. Also in rugby union there are scrums and lineouts. Tackling is about the only similarity plus the shape, but not size, of the ball.
