What are some similarities between American football and rugby union?

American football,is more like Rugby League.

There are very few similarities. In rugby union, for example, one of the basic laws is that you cannot throw the ball forward. Also in rugby union there are scrums and lineouts. Tackling is about the only similarity plus the shape, but not size, of the ball.
