The international Postal Services have been exchanging mail for a century BEFORE computer tracking.

Mistakes happen with the millions of packages and letters that move around everyday. Most common is the mail bag was not 100% emptied at some point.

They use this backup system called HUMANS they use their eyes and READ the Address.

I have not meet a German mail sorter that does not know Canada, Kanada or its other spellings.

Mail over the ocean is NORMAL to take a week or two.. Most of the time just waiting for next flight out or for the inspection on arrival.

Seriously do you expect some mailman to fly across the world and search out your letter

German Post might return to sender or just send it on to Canada.(Letters normally go to who they are addressed to)

They can also return it to USPS for them to send on to Canada.

The World's Post Offices have agreements with each other on what is to be done with misdirected mail.

 German postal service  You could contact them. Do you expect them to send out a team to search through millions of pieces of mail for yours ?

No one here can answer your question. It seems likely that the address wasn't legible. They may figure it out and send it on to Canada. Or they may not, and it will stay in a dead letter office in Germany. 

Then Germany will probably send it on to Canada, assuming the address is correct and legible. Or maybe they'll send it back to the sender, if she put a return address on it. Since it seems not to have been registered mail, there isn't anything you or she can do. They can't search the general mail stream for anything.
