What does the ‘x’ mean here?
‘Happy birthday x’

The 'x' is a symbol for kiss, usually used before a person signs their name to a note or card to a family member, dear friend, or romantic partner. An 'o' can go with it, which symbolizes a hug. An 'o' can also be used alone, without an 'x.'
A typical 'x' closing may show more than one 'x.' (for example, 'xxx'). The same applies to an 'o' closing. A typical 'xo'' closing, can show more than just the two letters. EX: xoxo, Mary.

It's the symbol for a kiss. People used to sign XO, where the O meant surrounding you with a hug.
