Why is there a news & events section and a separate politics & government section? Aren't the two basically the same?

    because there is news and there are events that aren't political.

    for example,

    "Scientists discover new Planet"

    "Hurricane hits Japan"

    News & Events seems to have more posters from GB, and Politics has more from US.
