Has Muswell Hill ever been a rough area?

Update:

I keep hearing that from other people, but I doubt it. It certainly doesn’t look rough, it has great architecture, and generally in London, where you have a hill you have affluence.

    Scottish serial killer and necrophile Dennis Nilsen committed his later murders in his Cranley Gardens flat in Muswell Hill and became known as the "Muswell Hill Murderer"
