Are snakes friendly?

I'm in California and the only dangerous/venomous snakes are rattlesnakes. But are other type of snakes friendly? I wanna hold one if I find one.

Kingsnakes are docile. Some of them may bite when first caught but their teeth are tiny, so it may barely break the skin. They generally just release musk when caught. Gopher snakes are also quite docile, although some of them are feisty and may hiss and strike when first encountered. Some of them are really tame. You can pick one up and it will crawl contentedly on your hand.  Garter snakes have smelly musk, long teeth and they tend to strike viciously when first encountered. The key to handling a snake safely is to grab it gently right behind the head. That way it cannot bite.

You need a fishing license if you are going to collect one and keep it as a pet. Most other snakes are generally pretty docile. The general rule is to leave a snake alone if it hisses and/or strikes.
