No txtspk please, save that for your girly twitter account. Try Nikolai Gogol for Russian short stories. Jorge Luis Borges wrote a number of short stories in the 'magical realism' style, which you might compare with Marquez.

O. Henry: "The Gift of the Magi;" (classic romantic); "The Ransom of Red Chief" (kind of a "Home Alone" predecessor).
William Saroyan: "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze."
Garcia Marquez: "Dialogue with the Mirror."
Dostoevsky: long and short of it: "Notes from Underground" and "White Nights."
