Cut the stem out of it, and then run cold water through it (turned upside down). Dry it thoroughly and then wrap it in paper towels. Eat it within three-four days, because it's very perishable. Don't wrap it in plastic or foil.

Use it up quickly. Lettuce has a very short life--and you have to use it before it turns to green slime.
I put mine in one of the ziploc bags with as much air pushed out before sealing the zipper as I can manage. It lasts about a week longer that way. But don't expect it last any longer than that--it's not supposed to.

Keep it dry and in the bin with paper towels underneath it to absorb moisture. Use it within about 2-3 days from purchase, it never lasts more than that. Usually from the time of picking from the field to the store it has started to decline anyway.

Picked or NOT Picked stored or not LETTUCE will eventually ROT the stability of lettuce diminishes with TIME same as human beings and other animals AGE
the LIFE span of a lettuce PLANT is only 130 days
head lettuce MATURES in 45- 55 days Romain matures in 75-85 days
and crisp-head MATURES in 70 - 100 days
Lettuce is primarily WATER and does NOT store well
the TYPE of LETTUCE is the variable
1- consume the lettuce in a timely manner within 7-10 days of purchase or harvesting
according to TASTE of HOME ..
..LOOSE LEAF lettuce can last 7 -10 days in the refrigerator , properly stored
HEAD LETTUCE left intact and " UNWASHED " can last 1-3 weeks
according to Web page MOMABLES
1-seperate the lettuce leaves place in large bowl or spinner
2-add 1 cup of vinegar and fill with water let rest a few minutes
3- then drain and rinse with water
4- Spin dry or shake off excess water
5- lay out on paper or dish towels to AIR DRY
6- place in a gallon size zip lock bag with a paper towel and refrigerate
a Individual would have to do their own repeat of this method from MOMABLES TEST-ABILITY to draw a conclusion of such action directed action ADDED time and how much time to the stability of lettuce as in be their own DETECTIVE rather than just accepting a CLAIM cause person X said so
it is my practice to purchase only the QUANTITY of produce i intend or plan to use that WEEK ( 7 day period ) and for " Bagged " lettuce check the BEST if USED BY date for example a loose or romaine lettuce

Put it in the crisper at the high humidity setting (assuming you have that option). Don't expect the freshness to last forever. I'd still try to eat it ASAP.
