Can you solder off a processor that is soldered to its motherboard?

I was wondering if you could solder a processor despite being soldered to upgrade it.

Are you able to, and if so, can you upgrade what processor you are using?

    THEORETICALLY that is possible

especially if your CPU is ***surface mount***.

    (Surface Mount Technology = SMT)

Practically speaking it's very likely to not work.

It takes a lot of precision

    and

it's easy to overheat the new SMT chip (causing it to fail).

If your CPU is NOT SMT

then it's probably even more difficult to solder the new CPU correctly into the circuit board...

unless were talking about an old, through-the-board CPU and a single- or double-sided circuit board. As far as I know those haven't been in use for decades.

Your "upgrade CPU" will have to have the exact same ***package configuration*** as the "old" CPU. That is: the same "pins" in the same configuration.

If you have the skills and equipment to do it, then it's technically possible to desolder any component and resolder one in its place.

Any device that has soldered components is probably designed to expect those specific components and likely won't allow things to be upgraded or downgraded from what it has installed.
