what would be the expected value of getting a 40 dollar bill as a gift?

how do i solve this when there is only one number in the question?Am i to guess its either -40 or 0?

    It is an exceptionally dumb question.  It has nothing whatever to do with probability.

    zero value, as there is no such thing as a 40 dollar bill.

    I'm guessing you are not an American.  There is no $40 bill.  So the probability of receiving one is p(s = 40) = n(40)/N = 0/N = 0.  Which means the expected value E(s = 40) = p(s=40)*40 = 0*40 = 0 ANS.
