Why do we end up with such poor presidential candidates ?

So you got the egotistical orange old rich dude or the confused paler than mayo on a paper plate old white dude. Trump is just such an unlikable douche, and Biden has been in government for 30+ years with no real notable accomplishments. 

I just don't get why respectable candidates like John Kasich, Tulsi Gabbard, Marco Rubio, or Pete Buttigieg? Instead of people at the apex of their mental prime who have experience, and are still in physically good health we get the choice between the less wrinkly of two old raisins.
