Why did my friend's phone ring after I said hello?

He called me & I answered & I said hello then he said his phone rang once then it went to normal.

    Phone systems are far from perfect.

    The power ring to ring the phone is sent by the receiving office.  The audible ring heard by the caller is sent by the sending office.  The two are not synchronized.
