American Standard is a good brand and plumbers do NOT dislike it.

they would rather sell you a toilet from a more exclusive line -- higher profit margin.  American Standard was indeed the 'standard' some years back ... and they were sold by near everybody, which forced plumbers to compete on labor cost [meaning their profit].  Suggestion:  Check prices online well in advance.  Check "flush power" ratings and volume of water used per flush [your local building code may limit this].  Print out the offer price for the one you like.  then go shopping for a plumber or handyman to install it and dispose of the old one (garbage in my area won't take a toilet).  When it is installed, pay the added 15 bucks for an extra thick wax seal -- this may well save a $150 future plumber's bill, as well as your flooring.  -- grampa

American Standard is an old-line high grade toilet.  Buy an expensive one and get the best manufacturing processes.  Kohler is an alternate equivalent.  Pay attention to the design and detail.  They are different.
