Should we go to Vegas?

I think "I Like Stories" has given you some good advice, and I'll throw in my two cents.  Personally, unless you're coming from somewhere close, like Los Angeles, I wouldn't bother for just two days. Instead, I'd wait until I could come for four or five days.  Then you could do everything there is to do that you might enjoy and, too, get a chance to relax.  In fact, if you have the time, you can go see the Grand Canyon as part of your trip.  If you haven't been there (and I mean walked on the ground and done at least a little hiking. . . seeing it from a helicopter is only slightly better than seeing it on TV), I'd suggest you try to lengthen your trip and get on over there. But that's how I like to do things.  Judge for yourself.

I have stayed at the Luxor, and I really liked it.  It is at the far end of the strip.  If you like to walk (as I do), you'll enjoy walking to the other casinos and seeing the sights on the way.  At times you don't even have to go outside as some of the casinos are connected.  Either way, there is no need to waste money on a cab.  Let walking become part of the experience.  And, most definitely, do some walking at night.  The lights are pretty incredible.  You get a great view from the top of the Stratosphere.

I also enjoy walking around inside the casinos.  It is free, and it is interesting.  I look at the wacko decor, the wacko carpets, and. . . the wacko people.  I take in the sights and the sounds and the smells (okay, not all of those are pleasant).  

Most of the food in Las Vegas is overpriced.  If you want s gourmet, it is going to be very overpriced and not necessarily as good as what you can get at home.  What I have done is to bring an ice chest and eat decent and healthy food that is available as take-out in local stores.  I like to spend my money where it counts.

What else I love to do is get out of Las Vegas.  There is a fair amount of hiking to be had.  If you haven't spent much time in the desert, this is a wonderful opportunity.  It shouldn't be too hot in April, especially if you go in the morning.  My favorite places are Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire State Park.  If you want to get up into the mountains, there is the Bristlecone Pine Trail (among others) in the nearby Spring Mountain Range, but check first to see if the trails are covered with snow.  If fact, if it is a big snow year, you might even be able to go skiing up there.  Another possibility, if you have an interest in birdwatching, is Corn Creek (near the Spring Mountain Range but on the other side of Highway 95).

There are shows I've loved but, to be honest, paying something in the neighborhood of $50-$75 for one to two hours of entertainment (and not necessarily having decent seats) just doesn't work for me.  And the reliance some shows have on being somewhat sexually explicit, to me, comes off as interesting as a plastic blow-up doll.  I guess if one of your favorite stars just happens to be there, though, it could be worth the cost of the tickets.

As far as the pools go, yeah, they're pretty good.  They all or almost all play piped in music, and never do they play anything I'd want to hear (the Luxor sure didn't the last time I was there), but I guess that's the sort of thing that not everyone minds.  It is really great to have a large pool to play in and, if you wake up early, you are going to have it mostly to yourself.  

I've never been into the party scene, and I have always had a good time in Las Vegas.  But truly it is all a matter of how much money you are willing to spend and what you like to do.

Disclaimer, it's probably been 5-7 years since I went to LV. 

I'd hardly refer to Las Vegas as America's urinal cake, in my opinion that description is better applied to New Orleans.  Although LV is the only place I've been where little kids are handing out business cards for hookers in public.

My description of Las Vegas is adult Disneyland.  Las Vegas exists to separate you from your money.  Gambling is the main thing.  You can't swing a dead cat over your head without hitting a slot machine.  There are slot machines in 7-11s, first thing you see when you get off the plane is a slot machine.

Agree that there is more to do than gamble and go to clubs.  There are great shows.  You can get discount same day tickets at a booth that is on the strip.  There is some really great shopping, there is (was) a shopping mall attached to Caesars Palace that was over the top.  

You can rent a jeep or dune buggy and go ride around in the desert.  LV isn't far from Hoover Dam (one of the man made wonders of the world).  You can get a plane/helicopter ride through the Grand Canyon (very cool).  You can go shoot machine guns.  You can bungee jump off the Stratosphere tower.

There are some very interesting restaurants to try.  Most of the celebrity chef's have restaurants there.  My experiences have been mixed with those restaurants, it all depends on how on their game the kitchen staff is the day you go there.  I will say that some of the best restaurant meals I've eaten were in LV.

It's helpful to understand that LV is a "weekend destination" for people coming from Southern California and Phoenix.  The rates in the hotels shoot up on Friday and Saturday night, the balance of the week even the high end places are affordable.  I've personally stayed at the Luxor, it was very affordable but nothing "special".  It's kind of dark inside and it's a bit of a hike to get further down the strip to where the bulk of the action is.  You don't need a car, for the most part you can walk.  There is a monorail, whose southern terminus is at the MGM.  

As for COVID, no idea how Nevada is dealing with it, however if they are being smart everything is wide open to pull the depressed people from S. California in.

My other comment is that 3 nights is long enough to be in LV.  You'll be sick of it after 3 days.

Las Vegas has made a number of changes over the past 10-15 years to be more of a family destination. The bar/club scene gets emphasized in movies, but it really isn't that big a part of Vegas. Normally, there's lots to do for people of all ages. It's true that some things are closed now, but some of the good restaurants are open. It's really fun just to walk around the strip- see the duplicate of the Eiffel Tower, the fountains at the Bellagio, and mall at the Venetian, which is painted to look like Venice, is definitely worth a visit. 

You are much better off to go somewhere else. There are many nice places to go in America so I do not recommend going to America’s urinal cake. It is your money and your vacation so do what makes you happy, and if going to Vegas makes you happy then go, just be careful with your hard earned money!

We aren't big on the bar/club scene and we enjoy Vegas.  But one of the things we enjoy the most is the shows, and some of those are still closed (but there ARE shows and attractions that are open now). Things may certainly be different there by April.  

There are great restaurants, some fun things to check out, and great people watching in Vegas.  You could definitely find plenty to do in two days, even under the current restrictions.  Vegas is always worth checking out - just be aware that you might not have a typical experience. 

As for hotels, Luxor is okay.  It's not in the best location.  The tower rooms are nicer than the much cooler pyramid rooms.  We like to stay farther north on the strip.  Flamingo is a good choice - it's got a great location, is updated, and has great rates.  Bally's and Harrah's are in that area and they are in good shape as well.  We also like Paris and Mirage.

All that being said, I'd be cautious about traveling right now (or even in a few months).  Things are slowly getting better in some areas, but there is still a pandemic.

Las Vegas really isn't Las Vegas right now.

There are no clubs/bars. There are also no shows going on nor any exhibits. And many restaurants are also closed.

If these things are open in your own neighborhood, you might want to stay there.

It's also winter in Vegas.  Yesterday was a balmy 68F but in general, you can expect it to be in the 50Fs this time of year.  The pools will not open until the end of March and even then it might be chilly to hang out for long.

Vegas is a gamble and sleep city these days.

Vegas is fun for anyone anyone, except right now. 

But when you decide to got to Vegas PLEASE SPURGE for a nice hotel.  The Luxor is just crap. 

you know what i did on my birthday? stayed home. because we're still in a pandemic. it must be nice to completely disregard anyone's health because you want to go somewhere for your boyfriends birthday and "get away" and "have fun". if you had any common sense, you'd realize clubs aren't even open here... and since you don't do that scene, what are you going to do? the most you can do is gamble... eat... yeah that's about it. 

normally i would say sure, come here. but during these times, i think you really need to get your priorities straight and stay right where you are....
