Paying for it is often cheaper and more certain than dating. It's usually safer too, because most prostitutes insist on safe sex.

Women can pay for sex because they receive something during the transaction (sperm).  Men should not pay for sex as they are already giving the sperm.

Personally I don't find it morally abhorrent if there's some discretion enforced by individuals partaking in paid sex.
