How can you make yourself throw up?

I read somewhere something called ipecac can do it but I'm not familiar with that; I also read you can stick a toothbrush down the back of your throat but that doesn't work for me; I'd rather just get it over

Update:

I'd rather just get it over with

Syrup of ipecac is no longer sold in stores. In cases of non-corrosive poisoning, there are better treatments than making the person vomit, most involving activated charcoal.

I know this because I'm a writer and had reason to research it three or four years ago, when a character needed to feign illness, and you asked at the Books & Authors board.

Making yourself vomit is rarely the best method to feeling better or dealing with overeating or anything else.

Ask your question  or "How to induce vomiting" in the search box on Google or another internet search engine.  I did and got the web pages of several home-medical websites, plus the Wikipedia article about Syrup of Ipecac.  "Emetics" was highlighted, so I clicked on it. BTW, the articles were interesting reads regarding how they work.

MsBittner is, as always, reliable and right. Activated charcoal is the emetic used nowadays.

I remember my mother giving me mustard in water because we did not have Ipecac. (Ipecac was the doctor's choice in 1960 when she phoned. Mustard was either his no.2 or my mother remembered it from her childhood. Or my aunt Mary or our neighbor did- Mother's "go-to" women. There was nothing about children my aunt didn't know.) I think I vomited but I'm not sure. I just remember it was hot and hard to swallow. I wanted to throw up. I gagged for several minutes over a bowl. I must've thrown up the mustard at least. It's amazing what bits come up when I try to remember. (Yes, Sir Caustic. I'm sure you are ROTFLOL. I typed that sentence that way just for your pleasure.) I was six and had eaten a few berries thought to be poisonous. (I suppose Sir C would say I ate too few. Andrew would, if he cared to read this far. I'm chatting but I'm too lazy to delete. I'm just amazed that I am piecing together shards of a long forgotten episode and I like this experience.so much I must write it down here before it's gone. Please don't report this for a day, so I can copy it in my journal.)

Read some of the excerpts of amateur writing in old questions posted to this section. That ought to do it.
