What was it that, can we say 'earned' your respect for them?

Consistent behavior, support during adversity, skill or determination.
A man that show up to work every day or knows his job is to be respected.
You can hate a man but respect him. It's assessment of worth not likeability.
You can even respect a man's potential to do you harm.
