what does the term serious trouble mean?
i've heard someone say it before but have no idea what it means?

the consequences are potentially severe. the "trouble" refers to whatever act was done to deserve negative consequences. They might be pretty severe consequences. They are serious, and the trouble is serious, not a light problem, but a very big and important problem, a serious problem, so expect serous punishment. No slap on the wrist for you. You are in deep crap.
