Do Schools Pay "Royalty Fees" for their Broadway Adaptations?

Nope.  My school had the best performing arts program in the city, we can not sell tickets and perform for an audience or make any money from those shows if we do not have the proper paperwork. Example: my class did Wicked, for the younger kids in Jr. High, unpaid.  We didn’t need the paper work because we are not making a profit from it.  And it’s still on Broadway so...can’t do it for real.  

Yes, schools do have to pay royalty fees to perform plays.  The author of the play deserves to get paid for their work.  Usually there is a (often greatly) reduced rate for schools because they are not doing the plays for profit.  And usually do not charge enough to do more than cover the cost of putting on the show (sets, costumes, makeup, props, etc.)  

Failure to pay royalties can result in huge fines.  Plus the company that acts that promotes the play for the author can refuse to allow the theater to perform any of the other plays they manage.

Was part of a school production were the royalties were $50 a performance.  The school did not pay them and made the mistake of posting a video of the performance on YouTube.  They got hit with a $100,000 fine for each performance (6 total.)  All because they did not pay $300 for the royalties.

Was part of another theater company where they played a song from another show as background during the intermission.  Someone overheard it, informed the company that managed the copyright, and they sued the theater for $10,000.  Fortunately, the composer of the music was a friend of the chairman of the theater, and so he wrote them a (postdated) letter giving them permission to play the music during the intermission.  So the sue was dropped.

We did a musical once where we paid an above average royalty fee (for a school production) to do the show.  At the end of the materials for the show had to be returned to the licensing company.  Somehow one of the copies of the music score did not get shipped back (the lead actress stole it) and we were fined $1,000 for not returned it.  

Yes, schools do have to pay royalty fees.

A play is still someone's intellectual property, and people still have to pay a (usually minimal) fee to use that intellectual property. Into the woods is a relatively recent play written in 1986, if the director did not want to pay for the rights to perform that play, there are plenty of plays that have fallen outside of their copyright term, and they're in the public domain, so you dont have to pay anything to put them on. But, if you choose to perform a play that's still under copyright, regardless of whether you're a major company or just a back yard performance troop, you have to pay for the rights, or you can be sued by the copyright holder (assuming they find out that you performed the play without permission).
