It was very dark, due to a total lunar eclipse that was in progress, at the time. Torch light was inadequate for a proper identification and in any case, the Temple guards didn't know what Jesus looked like.

They ignore Jesus' warning.
(Matthew 23:5) “5 All the works they do, they do to be seen by men, for they broaden the scripture-containing cases that they wear as safeguards and lengthen the fringes of their garments.”
These ones are called 'viper' and 'blind guides'.
I remember talking to one at the door who identified himself as "Reverend _________"
I replied, nice to meet you 'Mr. _________"
He replied 'That is Reverend _______'
I never called him Reverend.

Jesus never held a formal position in Israel. He couldn't be dressed in the robes of the priests, even though Jesus is a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedek.
Jesus came here to live as a man and to do as God wants us to do. (As Christ is so are we in this world (1 John 4:17)
As Jesus came to preach the gospel, so we too are sent out to preach the gospel of salvation and bring people into God's kingdom that they may be saved.

What do you mean?
What does one have to do with the other?
So, in order to acknowledge a religious leader, one must kiss him?

Because it is important for the flock to know who is preaching so they follow a fine example. Judas who betrayed him he would kiss the Messiah on the cheek. It must of been very sad for Jesus to be betrayed by someone he thought was a friend. I was betrayed by someone once who was told he was a good boy for taking care of his mom and now found out he was not a good boy and was using his mom and the things he said to me were a lie that sadly my brother believed and for him he will find many of the things he once believed in no longer work for him. This is the way it in the world when you are like that and it can cause a death or attempting to ruin a reputation that was not even hurt. Sadly for Judas for what he did to Jesus suffered the death of being a criminal and Jewish law said he had to to Gehenna where the criminals had their bodies thrown in a garbage area where the fire never went out. He betrayed Judas for the price of a slave. What a great dishonor to the Angel who saved humanity by teaching them all about heaven.

Jesus wasn't dressed up. The Roman soldiers the Jewish Sanhedrin coerced Roman Governor Pontius Pilate to send to arrest Jesus simply didn't know what Jesus looked like, supporting the fact that Jesus wasn't on the Romans' radar, just the Jewish Sanhedrin's. On the way, Judas had told the Roman soldiers all of the other Apostles would be there too, so the Roman soldiers, not knowing Jesus from Adam, realized they wouldn't know whom to arrest and needed Judas to point out which of at least 12 men present Jesus was in order to arrest the right man, so Judas told them he'd let them know which one was Jesus by kissing him.
Jesus wasn't in dress-up, wasn't in disguise. He just was unknown to the Roman soldiers arresting him, so they weren't able to recognize him by sight and needed Judas to point him out to them who he was, and with a crowd of men around him. They devised a way other than just pointing in order to not lose the element of surprise in a crowd of men likely to defend him and, probably, to protect Judas' identity as a mole, an undercover spy for at least the Sanhedrin and potentially the Romans embedded in what the Sanhedrin had alleged to the Romans was a seditious group whose aim was to overthrow the Romans, as well as the religious authority of the Sanhedrin, and install Jesus as King of the Jews, but to the Romans, if this group were seditious, they'd still want their inside man intact because the group might not necessarily dissolve without Jesus but might just replace him as their leader and would-be king, which actually is what happened with Peter, Peter becoming the leader of the Apostles and Christians and the first Pope, the Pope becoming the King of Kings.
