By hitting the ball cleanly right at the base of where it sits. You don't want to contact the ground too far behind or you'll take dirt, or if the ground is hard the club will bounce up and skull the ball. And if you're up too high you'll just skull the ball. If you still have a good distance to go, such as on a par 5, use your 3 wood.
