You would need something far more sophisticated and powerful than a Raspberry Pi, to get anywhere near the supposed intelligence of R2D2. Without a reasonably powerful computer a robot can only ever be a dumb remote controlled machine. There is no true "AI" yet, even the most powerful computers in the world are nowhere near having the speed and capacity needed. For DIY robot controller, something like a Jetson Nano board is a good start. They are far more powerful than a Pi and can run such as sophisticated machine vision with object recognition, do area mapping any much more.
