A 5K race is 5 kilometers (5000 meters); this is about 3.107 miles (Imperial measure).

The k stands for the prefix kilo- that refers to thousands.
So, 5k means 5,000 metres, (about 3 miles or possibly 1 hour of walking)

Five kilometres. It's in the name. The average person could walk it in an hour. I can run it in about half an hour in good condition.
