Is there anything else I can do to make myself a super safe driver?

Thinking of completing my probationary license period but I want to ensure that I am safe around pedestrians and myself when driving a vehicle. I always have these constant images in my head where I might accidentally hit a family member or pedestrian with my car if I don't do anything to make myself a super safe driver.  I have purchased a steering wheel, pedals and shifter combo for my computer racing games to help develop better hand-eye coordination. I have resorted to getting atleast 8 hours of sleep prior to driving. I have also thought of taking refresher courses.

Is there a way I can rest my right leg on the brake pedal without it activating the brakes and slowing down my car?  I do not like the idea of resting my foot on the accelerator pedal, particularly those with a drive-by-wire system that are very close to the firewall.

Yes.  Spend less time on the road.  Statistically the more time you spend on the road the more likely you are to have an accident.  YOU can do everything possible to make yourself a safe driver but as long as other drivers aren't doing the same your effort is futile.

YES ......we all need to learn how to drive around big rigs. It is insane the way we drive around them . One false move and we are dead meat. They weigh up to 80,000 pounds to our lite weight vehicles .

They cannot stop fast , when you cut them off , pull in front of them too close , you are putting yourself in grave danger , 80 thousand pounds will kill you fast if you do stupid things like pull in front of them and step on your brake . You may think you are going back down to the speed limit but what you are doing is forcing the truck driver to slam on his brakes which put you all in danger but you the most. you cannot play games with big trucks you will lose every time and we do a lot wrong , that is just one of the dangerous things you do. .

The only sure way to avoid accidents is to never drive.  The more time you spend driving will help alleviate your fears.

In many cars, just touching the brake pedal activate the brake lights, so it isn't a good idea.  Further, applying even a little pressure could wear on your brakes.  And I'm going to assume you drive an automatic, if so, you should only be using your right foot.  A lot of new drivers use both feet, one for the brake, the other for the gas. This is a really bad habit.  My kid did it, so I started closing the door on his left shoelace so he couldn't do it.  It annoyed him, but it broke the habit.

As for being a safe driver, the fact that you are concerned about it is a good start.  Far too many people think that having a license means you are a good driver.  It doesn't.  You need literally thousands of hours behind the wheel to develop the necessary skills.  Especially the skills necessary in panic situations.   The most imporatant thing you can do now is pay attention, and consider driving to be a privilege, and not a right.  Leave your phone alone.  Be careful to stay focused when you have other people, particularly young people in your car.

Pay attention. That is all you need to do. The vast majority of accidents are caused by distracted driving.
