If you've got plenty of money, Italy. If you don't, Brazil. I spent three weeks in Brazil and only spent $1,000, and that included my lodging. I spent three weeks in Italy, and it cost me about $6,500 for the same thing, so lodging, food, activities, etc.

Also, in Brazil, because it was so inexpensive, I actually did a lot more stuff, like we hired a guide to take us on a dune-buggy trip through the jungle, went base jumping off Sugarloaf and parachuted down to Ipanema beach, took a chartered cruise out to these islands, went scuba diving, all sorts of stuff. Plus, restaurants were so much cheaper in Brazil that we ate at the VERY BEST restaurants every night and for three of us, it'd cost us around $30. Those same restaurants in Italy would've cost us $300 to $400 for the exact same thing.

But, you can't see the Vatican, the Coliseum, the Spanish Steps, Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Statue of David (or any of Florence, which is tied with Barcelona for my favorite place of all time I've ever visited), ride a gondola in Venice, or any of those things. I mean, you can see Sugarloaf or Corcovado, can't visit Copa Cabana or Ipanema, but those things barely hold a candle to what you can see in Italy if Italy is your alternative, so there's that.

Italy. Brazil is a mess right now, and no one is trying to fix the problem.
