I agree with sirbobby and BBean. It's possible it could kill a small black bear but the odds are really bad for you, a wounded bear is very dangerous! I could list so many examples it would fill a big book. But whats the point of that, you have the net search go for it. The whole idea of hunting is to be a good efficient merciful hunter who does not cause needless suffering to the animal OR place a human in danger. What's more likely is that round wounds the bear and it runs off. Then some poor hiker unknowing gets near it and gets mauled to death. OR you go looking for it and it mauls you to death. Trolling or not someone who is clueless could read this Q and try it; BAD idea! I suggest you and only you go hug grizzly bears and love them to death. :)

Thanks for the compliment sirbobby...I have these spells from time to time. Visited Quora the other day following a YA answerer`s suggestion for an alternative and guess what after a short scroll?...the hand grenade pin replacement question after being pulled reminded me how troll questions never seem to die nor have bounds, however, until the end I will try to answer with facts...so... IMHO a .38spl will indeed kill a bear.(not my 1st choice)

 didn`t you reveal your bear hunting curiosities sooner? This section may have been saved from total despair if true bear hunters like yourself would have came forward with your originality. Killing a bear with a LadySmith loaded with .38spl +P`s is virtually non-existent in my boring area.(so are bears)
