Because they partnered with companies that made a product a lot of people wanted to buy: The IBM PC type computers and their clones.
They made the operating systems for those. That is, the various versions of MS DOS and Windows.
They made other software that people wanted to use that ran on those computers and under those operating systems.
A lot of people were and are willing to pay for those.
