Do you live in a safe neighborhood?
Is your area safe to the point where you can live in a non-gated house and actually sleep on the front lawn with the door unlocked?

Yes, there are under 800 people living in my town of 50 square miles and many of them don't ever lock their doors. I can only think of two or three houses that have fences, let alone gates, and they are mostly decorative. A few people have tents on the lawn, including one teepee. There have been about three burglaries in 20 years, and those were by "tourists" from nearby rentals taking advantage of the situation. There was a bit of a drug problem a few years back, but those responsible are in prison or moved away. I would say it's relatively safe here.

My house has no gate
I have slept on my open front porch when my AC was out
There are still safe places in the country and the world

Yes pretty good. Neighbours got burgled once but they were teachers and told pupils they were going to India for a month. Someone obviously passed this on.

I live in a condo building, in a very big city. It's a pretty safe area as urban neighborhoods go, but I wouldn't sleep in the park across the street. And we do have occasional crime. The other day, the police chased a car thief into the next street over from mine.
But hey, that's part of what makes city life interesting.
By the way, my mother lives in a lovely, affluent, suburb outside of a smallish midwestern city located in the middle of farm country. The area has been hit hard by the opioid epidemic and related crime. My mother doesn't have gates, but she would NEVER leave her doors unlocked or sleep on the lawn.

If I was asleep in the front lawn, it wouldn't really matter if the door was unlocked would it?
I don't live in a gated community.
I live in a city that has over 500,000 people.
I could sleep on the front lawn, but I wouldn't get much sleep because my neighbors would likely come check on me to make sure I'm ok.

in NO AREA is it safe to sleep on the lawn or leave the door unlocked, while it can be normally extremely safe, you never know when a bad person will come through

No, I let my dogs out to pee day before yesterday in the morning and only the big one returned to the door. I walked outside to find the little one and found her bloody and dead near the fence of my yard. Something murdered her in her own front yard. She had lived with me for 14 years and I am just devastated at her death. I always expected to find her dead in her bed some morning, but never killed by some random attacker in the yard.

Yes I live in a safe country, my house has bedrooms so no need to sleep outside and my door is unlocked any time I am home.....I accidently left my door unlocked and ajar a couple of weeks ago when I left in the morning for work which I came home in the afternoon to find and dozens of people would have passed the house .... no issue.... next door forgot to lock their door as they left a few weeks ago and left their keys in the lock I got a knock on the door from a passer by to tell me, so I locked their door and phoned them to tell them I have their keys

Definitely. As my mother-in-law always said anyway, locks are to keep the honest people out.
