Why is the majority of the southern hemisphere very poor ?

first, note how we have been conditioned by history to equate "civilization" with the management of resources (via the beginnings of agriculture and the infrastructure needed to support it)...

then, compare the most "advanced" nations and create a ratio between their ability to manage resources and the natural resources within their own borders...

if you do that, you'll find that there are only  a few nations that are both "advanced" and have adequate natural resources to sustain that "advancement"...

much of the southern hemisphere was resource rich, but because of this there simply wasn't the incentive to work metals into ploughs or invent a wheeled cart to move food and resources over long distances... people were able to sustain themselves at the "hunter/gatherer" stage for centuries longer than their norther counterparts...

of course, while working metals to make farm implements you also learn to make better weapons... the need to search long distances for food and resources means you become better shipbuilders and navigators... 

once Europeans reached the resource-rich southern hemisphere nations, they used their technological advantages to appoint themselves the managers of those resources....that established the precedent where those most "advanced" (the managers of those resources) weren't actual in the native land...

even as the Age of Colonization became the Age of Revolution, that system (where ownership of the resources was limited to a select, self-appointed few) remained largely in place...

that is yet another factor that makes the American Revolution and its legacy so unique among nations.... we somehow managed to uphold what the Founders intended and allowed the People to claim ownership and management over the resources....
