Im doing a science fair project on plants and I need a quick easy plant?
My project is about growing plants without soil and i need some fast plants that are easy to grow (its winter im in massachusetts so probly indoors) and they have to be fairly sturdy because they could be possibly under attack by cats. im thinking of growing them with lamps in my room. i have two lamps and a wide open white counter but not having to use the lamps as much would be nice because a need sleep. O and they have to be available at like a store i can get to like home depot or lowes ( which means not online like wisconisn fast plants)
small to medium plants would be nice because i have to measure hieght for most of project but that doesnt mean give me and 8 ft plant :D

First off, what grade are you in? My children had great success with pinto beans. You can use three different containers for the beans to grow, like small paper cups. Put one on your window sill, under a light and maybe in your closet. See which bean grows best. Or (one of my children did this in junior high) build a wooden box where three small paper cups can fit securely, approximately 8x12 size and make one hole at the top of the box for the light to enter. Feed your three various bean containers different food; water, Pepsi, juice. You can also have one planted in soil, another in tissue and sand. See which one grows faster, greener and etc. ***** Most important, keep a daily journal and track your beans every few days.
I'm not a science major, just a mother who supported and helped with many projects.

I think beans are the way to go if you are doing a project without soil. I have seen beans grown this way in a glass jar with the beans next to the glass, and paper towels behind them & like newspaper/sponge in the middle of the jar to keep the beans pressed up against the glass. You'll have to not let the contents get too wet or it will rot the plants. Beans made for garden seed, not food, will sprout better. Cats problematic once they have grown out of the top, plan ahead. South window/sun better too.

Rye grass or sunflower seeds. You want something that will grow pretty straight to make it easier to measure. I started some sunflower seeds in peat on about January 24 or 25th and of the 9, 8 are about 4 inches tall. I have them with light on them 24/7. Less light would make them grow at a slower rate. And they are the sunflowers that get about 5-6 ft tall, I think called Mammoth from Wal Mart.

I have been vegan for a year and am always hungry too. The only foods that seem to keep me full for a few hours is pasta/bread, beans, fake meats, and some processed foods. So I usually eat veggies w/ pasta or a veggie burger, if im still hungry i'll eat a banana w/ peanut butter. If i ate healthy all the time id be hungry and grumpy 24/7. I also started drinking coffee after i became vegan. thats the best for suppressing your appetite

Spouts, or sprouting seeds is an easy project and you can do so many different types... Alfalfa, lentils, beans.
For fast growing to maturity... small radish varieties. Baby lettuces and spinach will grow well now too.
Beans can be grow easy and use a dwarf bush type will mature faster too.
Onions family are easy to grow, like green onions and chives from seed and the cats will not like to eat them.

Strawberries, beans and tomatoes are probably your best bet. Pansies are also very sturdy. They are like weeds and never die. You cannot kill them. Basil seeds pretty quickly and like lots of light.
I'd reccomend either Basil or Beans.

Here you go. Radish. only 21 to 27 days from seed to pull it and eat.
