San Diego in Sept/October?

Hi! I'm looking to take my first trip to SD in September but if that's all booked up it may get pushed to October. I was wondering if the water/air is still warm enough for swimming in the ocean that time of year?

Also, I've basically decided to rent a house in either La Jolla or Pacific beach- good choices for swimming? A little out of the way of the downtown scene but not too far right?

Update:

is Karen H right when she said it's too cold to swim in the water all year??? I've never heard of this?!

The water is usually pretty chilly by October and not many people without wetsuits are still swimming by that time. The air will still be warm usually but the water usually starts to cool off by mid to end of September. La Jolla has nice beaches and PB is cool too and it's only 5 miles to downtown.

edit: Karen H is completely wrong, during the summer the water is warm enough to swim in or else there wouldn't be thousands of people at the beach and swimming in the water. Unless you find low 70's water cold, then it's warm enough to swim in. The past couple of weeks water temps were around 75, which is not cold at all.

Normally by early October, the water temp has dropped down below 65 (I won't go in after that without a wetsuit), but this year the ocean water temp has been several degrees warmer than usual. Unfortunately, the surf has been small most of the summer. Air temperature should be pleasant into October. Evenings may drop down into the 50s.

As far as entertainment goes, both PB & La Jolla have their own scenes and neither are that far from the Gaslamp district. La Jolla is nicer; PB can be a rougher crowd. If you rent a house in PB, try to get one at least a couple of blocks away from Mission, Grand and Garnet; it'll be much quieter at night.

Best of luck with your trip!

You will probably need a wetsuit that time of year. The water is usually chilly even in the middle of summer. Both PB and La jolla are nice places - only about 15 minutes drive to downtown with no traffic.

Honey, the water isn't warm enough to swim in in the middle of July during a heat wave. Definately not too far from downtown.

I went to San Diego last November. The air temp. was great (mid 70's), but the water was a bit chili. I suppose if you wear a wet suit it might be a bit more bearable.
