What does 4140 B-7 A193 ASTM mean?

under ASTM the A### usually means type/strength of metal.. in this case it is an alloy A193, the B7 refers to the bolt markings..

This is a stud or bolt specification that is very common in industry for a high strength bolts made from AISI 4140 steel. It sets the dimensions, tolerances and composition for the bolt.

It is used in the oil, gas, refining and processing industries primarily for flange bolting. It's companion is usually a 2H nut(s). The combination is almost impossible to twist off.

There are other variations on this standard such as the L7 which can be used at low temperatures below -20 degs F
