Lost keys to my 1988 jeep. The jeep dealer told me I can't get replacements--is this true?

I, dont know. But I lost the keys to my car, which is a different model and year, this was very scary becasue I had no replacements, I called a Locksmith that does car keys, he came over opened my car and made me a key, plus an additional key. It cost me around $200.00

There are a lot of lazy parts people in dealerships.

The key blanks can be found at many hardware stores. However cutting a new key from a worn out key causes it's own problems.

If you have a key and take it to a real lock smith, they can cut a new master quality key after checking the pin depth.

Of course they can also make on just like true value does, but on a worn key not a good idea.

There are also places that deal with OEM parts that are out of date for Jeeps. One of them may have a complete set of locks and keys that will provide you like new operation of them.

As someone else said, there is a code on the door cylinder (and some time the glove compartment) that will provide the numbers a lock smith needs to cut a new key.

Also if you can drive the car to the locksmiths shop, many times it will cost less then a call to your house. (35 dollars instead of 200)

Yes you can still get keys for them. But I don't think you can get them from a dealer anymore since that was 20 years ago. You can still go to a locksmith. The key blank # for the ignition if I'm not mistaking is RA4 and for the door it's RA3 (American Motors Blank). An interesting thing you can do that I know for a fact is have the ign. key rekeyed to fit to the doors or the door key rekeyed to fit the ign. since the grooves on both keys are exactly the same once you get the new keys made that way you can use one key like the newer cars on the road today. If the jeep uses the newer bigger head double sided Chrysler key than it is either Y154 or Y157 (not positive but I'm leaning towards Y154). Good Luck in having your vehicle back on the road again.

If the jeep is unlocked or you can get into it, you can open the door panel and some auto makers stamp the key code onto the lock cylinder. If not, take it to a lock smith. It is cheaper to make a key if they have just the cylinder. The ignition switch, if it is a different key, may cost considerably more.

The dealership probably can't get replacement keys but a good locksmith can make a new set of keys for you. Its expensive, but it can be done.

if they say so,,,try locksmith...most car makers stop making parts after 10 years.

Look on ebay, craigslist or all over the internet to see if they still make them.
