How does a foreign actor get work in Hollywood?

I'm in New Zealand, and would love the opportunity to move to L.A for a while, and try my luck there. I've been an actor since I was 15yrs old, and am now 24.

I know immigration is very tight, and you need a job offer first, before moving there. This is obviously not possible with acting work, as one needs to go through the audition process.

How do I move there? How have other people done this? I would happily wait tables, but I'm not sure if anyone would be willing to offer a foreigner a job, when there are so many americans willing to wait tables too!

Help, I need some brainstorming ideas!!

Update:

Thanks for the comments so far, but I'm after specific imformation regarding immigration/paperwork. You need a job offer BEFORE moving to the states to work, so how have other actors worked around this?

Show biz is tough and it's not as glitzy and glamourous as it is made out to be. I am in the show biz industry myself and i can vouch for this. In L.A. it is the same as in other parts of U.S.A. and indeed, all over the world. You just have to be in the right place at the right time. It is not a question of nationality but more of luck. Talent comes into it too ofcourse. Good luck - and as thespians say - break a leg!
