What SUV can tow 7000 lbs but get good gas mileage when not towing?

My wife is looking to buy a new car which every now and then she can also use to pull a horse trailer. I understand that the engine and transmission ratio I'll need will push down gas mileage...just looking for the best of a lousy set of options!! Not looking for pickups or diesels! Thanks, Dave

    None, for sure.

The Chevy (Tahoe, Suburban) with MDS+hybrid, when it comes out, might do a reasonable job. They're not really available yet. That's a probably $60,000 truck, though. It might be cheaper to buy the gas.

    Easy answer, none.

A diesel would suit your application best, as they make so much more power down low, without the motor working hard.

As im from Aus, Im not up with your laws, but I would expect that there would be limitations as to what vehicles you can use. Maybe phone your local registration office and ask them what rules you will have to abide by, then phone car dealers and see if the cars comply.

If it was going to be a regular thing, I wouldnt contemplate using a petrol, I would be using a diesel pickup with dual rear tyres.

Well you need at least a V8 and you're probably looking at a full sized SUV so you're likely out of luck unless you have a very flexible definition of "good gas mileage". Especially since you're disqualifying diesels.

Pickups and diesels are the best for it though.
