We want to purchase a doberman puppy, what are some good questions to ask prospective breeders?

We're looking for a red doberman puppy, and this will be our first time purchasing from a breeder. Supposedly these dogs have great bloodlines and everything, and of course the sellers say they are obediant...which you can't say a puppy that is only a few weeks old...obediant.

So can you help me with some questions about dobies I should ask, I have a few, but maybe some people or other breeders out here might have some info.

Thanks!

PS: I have experience with dogs...this is not my first time dog by the way. And I know about the breeds requirements, thanks!

Honestly, if you went to me "looking" for a red doberman, it would be hard for me to sell you one. You are looking for a color, not temperament, breeding, work drive, prey drive, health, activity level, etc.

Great bloodlines mean squat unless you know what to look for.

Q: Are both parents OFA good to excellent?

A: Yes. Here are the OFA numbers.

Are both parents titled in some way?

A: Yes. Or, the Sire is and the Dam is pointed

How did the most recent Cardio tests come back? And how recent were they?

A: Clear. And should be relatively recent cardio tests

    vWD carriers on either side?

A: No, or only on one side

    What is the health guarantee?

A: Show dogs are guaranteed from any genetic defect that precludes them from showing. A full refund, a new dog, or the difference in price between a show & pet dog will be given.

All dogs are free from genetic defects and guaranteed for at least 2 years.

All dogs are free of any illness as of this time. A vet check is required within 48 hours of getting the puppy home.

Will they take the dog back for the rest of its life?

    A: A strong YES

How are they socializing the pups?

A: However we can. Lots of interaction with other dogs, people, kids, the TV, noises, etc.

Are they DPCA members? What local DP club are they involved in?

A: YES. And whatever local DP club there is.

How long have you been involved with Dobes?

    A: At least 5 years

What was the goal of this breeding?

A: Show, working, Search & Rescue, service dogs, and several other answers is acceptable.

Because my Dog is AKC with good bloodlines is not a correct answer.

There are a hundres other questions. Have you been to http://www.dpca.org/ ?

A few questions I can think of...

    1) How long have you been breeding

    2) Do you breed puppies for show lines or family pets?

    3) Do you have any references?

    4) Can you meet the parents?

ask the breeder what she personally looks for in a dog. Ask her to show you or explain what she means.. what trait she is trying to strengthen in her dogs, and what flaws she is trying to overcome. A honest breeder will admit flaws in his/her dogs and be willing to explain them.

Ask if she will take back a dog if the unforseen happens and the dog is homeless.

Ask if she can give you references from people who have other puppies she has bred.

When you leave check and see, does her ideal line up with the registry standards?

Why did you do this breeding?

Are you a member in good standing with the local and national club?

What are the OFA ratings for hips, elbows, and hearts, and what is the CERF rating for eyes?

I would def. ask if there has been any problems with red mange in the sire and dam. Its a skin disease that is very costly and is hereditary. Make sure you ask for references and contact them to ask if there have been any health issues with there puppy

well the first thing is red dobermans are not susposto be red teh doberman is black with rust or mahogany marks so if you find a breeder who has a red doberman ask them WHY they breed red dobermans..
