Canon EOS 30D - problem with Canon Utilities and downloading photos?

To download photos from my camera, I have always just plugged it in to my laptop, turned my camera on, and the Canon Utilities menu pops up. I then click on start downloading images, and it all happens. Now, out of the blue, the Utillities menu won't open, until I disconnect the camera. Then it opens, but the "start downloading" button is greyed out. I have also tried manually starting Utilities, but it won't start.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software, and formatted the CF card.

The only thing I can think of is that I updated some antivirus stuff on my laptop (Super AntiSpyware, Spybot, Ad-Aware etc) since I was last able to download photos. I have since uninstalled them all, but to no avail.

Help please from anyone who can!

Most of us will just tell you to get a card reader. It's a lot easier than any other fix we'd recommend, plus it saves battery power since your camera doesn't have to be on to copy the files. Card readers are also pretty cheap compared to other accessories you might buy.

If you don't want to get a card reader and insist on being able to copy them by plugging your camera up to the laptop, you need to uninstall all the Canon software and reinstall it. Check the Canon Website for updated versions of what's on the CD that came with the camera.

Another option is to use the System Restore feature of Windows to bring your computer back to a state when it last worked. There's no guarantee that you have System Restore turned on or if it even has a snapshot from that far back. The downside is that any programs you've installed since that date will need to be installed again.
