All babies have a softer shell than an adult. The shell is comprised of sections called scutes. If the shell is peeling off in thin fingernail-type semi-transparent layers/sections, he's just shedding, which is perfectly normal.

To be sure he's getting the calcium he needs, keep a bird cuttle bone in the water of his tank at all times. If he eats it, that's fine, and if not - he'll get calcium as he drinks the water. Providing small rosy minnows and guppies will provide added calcium by eating their bones. You can also offer small sections of chicken liver dusted in fine ground bone meal.

Don't forget carrot curls for Vit. A, and squashes. He also needs leafy dark green vegetables/plants.

He needs UVB light within 8-12" (replace twice yearly) 10-12 hr. a day so he can absorb vitamins and calcium.

    ok...

peeling of the shell... i think he's JUST GROWING UP! It's normal and they'll also shed their skin! you should be worried if the shell ISNT peeling because that means he isnt growing.

Soft shelled... if his shell is getting flimsy go to your local walmart and they have calcium that comes in a little turtle shape :D you do have a heating lamp and basking area RIIIGHT??? and water!!!!

If you need add. help contact me: Edsbeachbaby@gmail.com

I've raised many types and ages of turtles :D right now im raising 2 quarter sized painted turtles and they're JUST NOW peling their shell :D

most likely your turtle isn't getting the proper lighting.
