New England is pretty big. But let's say you live near Boston.

    Go to heavens-above.

Register (it's free, and they won't spam you).

    Create an observing location.

    Add from database.

    United States

    Type Boston

Click on the one in Massachusetts.

Set it as your default (if you need to).

    Click on Home.

Half way down the page is a Sun link.

    Here's the relevant data:

    Sunset: 17:52

    Astronomical twilight ends: 19:26

The Sun sets, but you won't be able to see much. Astronomical night starts at 7:26 pm. That's when the Sun is 18 degrees below the horizon. You'll be able to see some stars before that, but this is when you'll see them all.

Computing when the Sun is 18 degrees below the horizon is a royal pain. But computers are good at these sorts of things.

Once you're set, you can just log in and look this stuff up. This site has lots of other handy stuff.

New England is a very large area, so you would need to be more specific as to location. You also need to be clearer about what you mean by "when the stars come out": when are the first objects (Venus and Jupiter at present) visible? When are first magnitude stars visible? When are the faintest stars visible? What sort of light pollution do you have? There are no fewer than three definitions of twilight: civil, nautical, and astronomical.

Not an easy question to answer, because you haven't defined what you're asking.

Stars become visible in the night sky as soon as the sun has set and the sky has darkened enough.

Bright stars are visible sooner, since the reason stars are not visible is due to sunlight washing out the dimmer starlight.

Its just after 7:00 pm Eastern Standard time, and if the skies were clear here I would be able to see some stars.

Depending where in New England, you might not be able to see any stars if you are in or near a lit up city or in a town where people like lighting up their yards and at the same time the sky. Here in New England, we are having a losing way when it comes to light pollution. If you are from Arizona or some other dark sky place, then forget about it. The sky in N.E. doesn't ever compare to those skies. We see one star for every two hundred a dark sky would see. We haven't had skies like those in 40 years. Unfortunately, most people have no idea about the things they are missing from not looking up and for lighting up the night sky. If you know what's up there, it's kind of sad. Look up, if you can
