When do custom license plates expire?

I've had personalized license plates for about a year and a half now. How do I find out when/if they expire? Specifically in New York, because that's where I'm located right now. I used to live in Virginia and they had stickers on them with the expiration date which leads me to question my New York plates. I've Googled this and looked on the NYS DMV web site and have no found any answers.

    Every year you have to get them renewed. Umm look at your plates and in one corner will be a month and the other corner will be your year like 09 or 08 whenever it expired. All you do is go to your DMV office and get them renewed. The tags themselves are always good if the sticker is good...

    The plates expire when your registration expires.
