2003 Ford Taurus stalls ?

After driving the car yesterday, I noticed that something was beginning to squeak. I assumed it was the belt and made a note to check it when I got the chance. Today, I started the car and it immediantly got jumpy. I was startled so I looked down at my dash and the rpms were jumping around like crazy. They weren't going way high though. They just wouldn't stabalize. I reved the engine a little and then put on the brakes and it leveled out. Thirty minutes later while sitting at a red light, the car stalled on me. I immediantly turned it off and then restarted it and everything started fine. The only time that I have seen any engine lights come on was when the car stalled. Any ideas?

The squeaking noise you heard when the trouble started tells me otherwise. If you did hear a squeaking from under the hood and the engine started running funny, I would suspect the camshaft position sensor and synchronizer. This acts almost like a distributor on an older engine but is actually there to time the firing of the fuel injectors. If it fails it usually gives a tell-tale squeaking noise. The fuel injectors will then go into a default mode and fire at will, which usually makes the vehicle surge at cruising speed and gives an unstable idle. If you decide to take it in to have the PCM scanned for codes (there will be codes stored even if the light went back off) and you have a P0340 in memory for a CMP failure, it may be a problem with the camshaft position sensor or synchronizer and will cause a stall and unstable cruise and idle. It is a common failure on the 3.0 liter 2V engine.

check the power steering fluid level, tha'ts probably the squeak, also the motor will work harder if it low making it jumpy, I have a 1999 tauras, these are common problems on them, try that and see.

you may need to take it in and have it checked out but it sounds like a bad IAC (idle air control motor)
