A psychiatrist trains as a Dr and then specialises in psychiatry, so they are by all accounts a Dr, and may prescribe medication. Nowadays, they have very little time to spend with patients on a one to one basis, and so patients usually see their psychiatrist only once every three months, for less than an hour, or when a review is due. A psychologist may see someone weekly, and deliver psychotherapy or other forms of treatment. The psychologist would usually refer someone to a psychiatrist if their need is great enough.

A psychologist has a masters or doctorate in psychology. They counsel patients and help them understand what is wrong and how to make a plan to fix it.
A psychiatrist is a doctor. From what a psychology professor told our class, anybody taking 1 year of college psychology has as much knowledge in it as a psychiatrist. They major in medicine and usually leave therapy and counseling to psychologists. They can prescribe drugs too.

A psychiatrist is also an MD and can prescribe drugs, where a psychologist can't.
